Late at Tate Britain: From Tomorrow

In the not so distant future…
British Museums are introducing a new currency, Cura (C), to celebrate the impact of British arts and culture on society.
Cura is a way for museums to directly give back to their visitors. By writing their own interpretations for wall captions that accompany works of art, they will be able to make their own cura to spend across museum shops and cafes.
Simply take your cura to our bank points for a Curator to value and you can begin spending. For one night only, you can exchange your cura for an exclusive Late at Tate Britain tote bag! *
After you’ve exchanged your cura, we will display your interpretations on to the arches for other visitors to vote for their favourite. This way, you can help museums learn more about how the British public likes to interpret their works!
*Limited availability. First come, first serve!
Cura is an experimental exercise in exploring how museums can step out of their comfort zone and give their visitors more control. At its core, this workshop asks us to question how we assign value to art and who gets to?
The workshop uses the act of writing or drawing a wall caption for artworks as a futuristic currency. The visitors can exchange their interpretations for a tote bag by having a curator value their wall caption(s) at an exchange point.
To counteract the curator’s authority in determining the value, the visitors then could hang up their captions for a public vote. This allowed the visitors to question how the museum made judgements but also to give some autonomy back to the public.
This workshop was based on museum education research papers that investigated how museums could loosen their narrative control over their collections. The answers show a great reflection of the diverse range of visitors that participated.
